The Story of Mizanur Rahman
Mizanur Rahman was the sole provider for his family, running a grocery business in Dhaka to support his wife, child, and parents who lived in their village. He lived with his wife and child in the Rampura Banasree area of Dhaka.
On July 19, 2024, after finishing his prayers and lunch, police shot him in the left knee as he was on his way to his shop. Severely wounded, he called his wife, Maria Afrin Tusi, and his sister, Asma Begum. They rushed him to Advance Hospital, but doctors said the bullet could not be removed. He was then transferred to a trauma hospital, where he died that same night.
Mizanur's body was taken back to his village in Barisal, where he was buried in the family graveyard. He was the only son of Md. Kamal Hossain, from the village of Purbo Keshobkathi in the Wazirpur Upazila of Barisal district.
Family's Grief and Demands for Justice
Mizanur's wife, Maria Afrin Tusi, expressed her profound sorrow, saying she now has a 20-month-old son who calls out for his father, a father he will never know. "Everyone else's son will get their father's love, but my son will be deprived of it," she said. She tearfully demanded the death penalty for those who killed her husband. She also shared that she cannot sleep at night and is haunted by the image of her husband's bloodied body.
Mizanur's mother, Shahanaz Parveen, demanded justice for those who have "emptied her chest," a common expression for losing a child.
Mizanur's father, Md. Kamal Hossain, also spoke of his anguish, stating that Mizanur was his only son and the family's only source of income. He demanded justice from the government, questioning why his innocent son was killed and who will now care for them.
