Three Families in Crisis After Losing Abuzar

Three Families Devastated by the Death of Abuzar

Abuzar, a private car driver from Paschim Nayanagar village in Melandah Upazila of Jamalpur district, was the son of the late Tara Mia. His sudden death has plunged three families—his mother’s, his childless widowed aunt’s, and his grandmother’s—into deep crisis. All three were dependent on him for financial and emotional support.

Abuzar worked for a company in the Kuril Bishwa Road area of Dhaka. On July 19, during an anti-discrimination protest near Jamuna Future Park in the capital, he was shot in the chest by police. The bullet pierced through five points in his chest and exited from the other side of his body. He was rushed to Evercare Hospital and remained under treatment there until July 24. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Metropolitan Hospital in Mohakhali, where he passed away on the night of July 27.

The loss shattered not only his immediate family but also the households of his aunt and grandmother. His mother, Sufia Bewa, his widowed aunt, and his elderly grandmother have since been living in dire conditions.

According to family sources, Abuzar’s aunt is now virtually homeless and in a desperate state.

His mother, Sufia Bewa, remains inconsolable. “My son will never come back,” she says. “I want justice for those who took him from me. I’ve endured so much pain. No one suffers like I do—every dream has been destroyed.”

Abuzar’s elder brother, Shahidul Islam, shared,
"We had cleared space next to our home and bought bricks to build a new room. We were preparing for Abuzar’s wedding. But all those dreams have turned to dust. We had to sell the bricks and many other things to cover his treatment. We even went into debt."

He added,
"We spent over 1.4 million BDT (approx. $13,000)—11 lakh at Evercare and 3 lakh at Metropolitan—but still couldn’t save him. Though we received some support, we are still crushed under the weight of debt and grief."
