Hridoy Hossain (17), a resident of Shibchar Upazila in Madaripur district, was martyred in the revolution in July 2024. The only son of the family was shot dead in Badda, Dhaka, on July 19, amid the quota reform movement.
Father Shah Alam Howlader said, "My only son Hridoy's studies were interrupted due to the coronavirus. Later, to restore the family's well-being, I gave him a job at my cousin Monir Hossain Molla's factory on Badda's Link Road, and he worked there for about three years. He would keep his own expenses from his salary and send the rest home."
"My son will never come home again, he won't call me, he says," said Shah Alam, who burst into tears after saying this. He wants justice for his son's murder.
Shah Alam Howlader said, "What crime did my son commit? Why did they shoot him? I can't explain to anyone the pain of carrying my son's body as a father. I never thought I would carry my son's body. But why did my son die in the shooting? Will I not get justice for him?"
Describing the incident, Monir Hossain Molla said, "On Friday, July 19, after offering Friday prayers, Hridoy went to eat at a nearby mess. After eating, while returning to the factory, he was about to cross the road and saw that the road was covered in tear gas smoke. Before he could realize anything, a bullet suddenly entered his chest and exited through his back amidst the covered smoke.
Monir Hossain said, "While he was shot, he took off his shirt and bandaged the bullet wound to try to stop the bleeding." At that time, someone familiar with Hridoy informed me about the bullet wound. In the meantime, the protesters admitted him to a nearby private hospital. Later, I took him from there and admitted him to a hospital in Aftabnagar. After the examination, the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Meanwhile, upon receiving the news, Hridoy's father Shah Alam, who was in Moghbazar, came to Howlader Hospital. And the father carried his son's body on his shoulders. Then, sometimes on his shoulders, sometimes in a rickshaw and finally in an ambulance, his father Shah Alam brought his body to his village home, Rajar Char, Sannyasi Char Union, Shibchar, at night. The next day, after the funeral, the body of martyr Hridoy was buried in the local cemetery.
Grandfather Rafiq Howlader said, "Although the July Revolution gained momentum due to the sacrifice of my grandson Hridoy Hossain, his family is now motionless. The family is now disoriented after losing their only son. His father's mental condition is still abnormal. Because of this, he had to quit his job as a driver. Due to financial difficulties, their family is running on the support of relatives. God knows how long they can continue like this."
Rafiq Hawlader said that many political and other leaders have visited the house of Hridoy. But no one has provided any assistance. Among them, Parveen Khanam, Executive Officer (UNO) from Shibchar Upazila Administration, has given 5 thousand taka in cash. Moreover, the July Smriti Foundation called last December and assured of assistance.
In a tearful voice, mother Nasima Akhter said, "So that the memory of Hridoy Hossain may live on among people for generations to come, if any establishment or road in Shibchar is named after him, we would get some peace and some relief. Therefore, we are strongly demanding that the concerned authorities implement it."
